Dinners Don’t Just Cost Calories

Dude, you’re in the top 25 percent of men your age, as he stepped of the InBody scale.

If you’re looking for personal training San Antonio has plenty of options, but eventually you get to the part we don’t normally discuss, which is what happens when someone is doing absolutely badass and just doesn’t feel like it.

And that 25 percent deserves some context. It’s not 25 percent of everybody his age. It’s 25 percent of people his age who go to a gym and get on an InBody and track their muscle mass, body fat, and body weight. That’s a group of people that regularly track their fitness, suffice it to stay, it’s pretty fit company.

He said, I know, but I just want to lose a little more body fat.

As he pinched at the bit of fat around his midsection.

Sure.

But at some point the question stops being Can I? and becomes Is this reaaaally that important?

The Third Column On The Receipt

We price dinner in dollars. That’s the first column.

When we’re focusing on losing weighty, we start pricing it a second way.

  • The glass of wine is 200 calories
  • The chicken marsala is 700
  • The chocolate cake is 500

Both columns count.

This member likes grabbing a quick beer with his husband at the brewery next door. A beer or two, maybe an hour.

Is that the thing you want to cut?

Because the dessert wine costs 175 calories, and it also buys you another twenty minutes with people you care about.

For me? I’ll happily trade calories for time.

What The Last Five Percent Actually Costs

Maybe hitting the top 1 percent for your age matters to you. Some people are wired for it, and that’s ok.

But for me right now? I’m not really that concerned with being that fit.

The truth is the closer you get, the more it costs and the less it gives back.

Going from out of shape to genuinely fit changes your knees, your sleep, your energy at 3pm, whether you can pick up a grandkid. Going from fit to elite changes a number on a screen.

And it charges you.

It changes the birthday dinner you skipped, the Friday Happy Hour you passed on, the quick math on a menu.

Ask what you’re spending before you decide it’s worth it.

What Personal Training San Antonio Clients Get Wrong About Eating Clean

Healthy people drink wine. They have beer. They eat dessert.

I’ve coached a lot of very fit adults over the last 20 years and none of them are eating grilled chicken out of Tupperware on a Saturday night.

The difference isn’t discipline. It’s not a shorter list of allowed foods either.

They built something that fits their actual life and they run it without thinking about it. When most of your week is already handled, one dinner out doesn’t do a damn thing.

And the system can be pretty damn boring.

  • The at-home meals are dialed. Four or five solid dinners a week means the sixth one doesn’t have to be.
  • The grocery list got audited. What comes in the house gets eaten. Fix the list, fix eighty percent of it.
  • There’s fruit on the counter. Way easier to grab an apple Wednesday afternoon than to out-willpower the candy rack at the HEB checkout.
  • The menu got looked at in the car. Decide before you’re hungry and the chips and salsa has hit the table.

None of that is restriction. It’s just stacking the deck so the default choice is the one you’d have made anyway.

Quick Answer

Do you have to give up alcohol and dessert to lose body fat? No. Fat loss comes from a caloric deficit held over time, not from banning specific foods. Most people do better keeping the two or three things that actually matter to them and tightening up the rest of the week.

Food Is A Relationship Thing Too

Birthdays. Sunday dinner. The happy hour after work. Half of how we stay close to people involves sitting around a table.

When a nutrition plan ignores that, it eventually forces a choice between the plan and the people. And people pick their people. Then they feel like they blew it.

You didn’t blow it. You just need a better plan.

FAQ

Can you drink alcohol and still lose body fat?
Yes. Alcohol has calories like everything else, so it either fits in your day or it doesn’t. If a beer with your spouse on Friday is worth 150 calories to you, buy it and stop thinking about it.

How do I eat healthy when I go out to eat a lot in San Antonio?
Handle the meals you cook and quit trying to make restaurant food perfect. Look at the menu before you get there, pick something with real protein in it, and make the best choice with the options available.

Is it worth getting to a very low body fat percentage after 40?
For most people, no. Average to fit gets you nearly all of the health and quality-of-life payoff. The last few points cost more flexibility than they’re worth to almost anybody.

What does an InBody scan actually tell you?
It splits your weight into muscle, fat, and water instead of handing you one number. That matters because it shows whether you’re holding onto muscle while you lose fat, which the bathroom scale has no idea about.

Where That Leaves You

Healthy nutrition means food adds to the relationships that matter most.

If juggling your goals against going out to dinner feels hard, that’s normal and it doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. Just decide what the calories are buying. Some nights it’s a leaner midsection. Some nights it’s twenty more minutes with your partner.

Both can and should work.
